Mary-Lou Carlyle
Registered Psychologist
Mary-Lou is a Registered Psychologist with a Masters of Counselling.
Mary-Lou recognizes that making the decision to reach out for extra support can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. Everything from not knowing which therapist to book with, to worrying about what the process will look like, to wondering how long it will take to feel better.
Mary-Lou prioritizes making her clients feel welcomed and at ease with her warm, approachable, and down-to-earth nature. She is a strong believer that the issues that bring clients into counselling can be serious and complicated, AND it is ok to incorporate humour and laughter into sessions when appropriate. Counselling does not have to be a narrow vision of a clock ticking with a therapist silently waiting for your deep responses.
Mary-Lou avoids using a cookie cutter approach and instead works with her clients to create a unique experience by drawing from elements of Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Attachment Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Mary-Lou has volunteered with the Calgary Distress Centre for many years, has experience working with children of all ages, couples, and has provided therapy to clients experiencing diverse challenges such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, work-related trauma, self-esteem, and relational issues.
She has specialized training in:
- Gottman Couples Therapy Levels 1 & 2
- ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)(for trauma)
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Please note: Mary-Lou does not work with children under the age of 13
